Duke

Hiking boots, brown;
dress pants, white;
Polo shirt, black;
the clothes I wore on the day we lost what can never come back.
Breathing, difficult;
body, inflamed;
he felt his pain and we were feeling the same.
Floor, despondent;
Fur, thick;
there should be more gray for my hands to pick.
Drive, short;
parking, long;
lobby, brutal;
wanted to leave but the struggle was futile.
Waiting room, quiet;
faces, wet;
we held tight our best friend who was also a pet.
Doctor, kind;
table, high;
the three of us pressed close and continued to cry.
Breathing, gone;
Body, still;
Heart, stopped;
wanted to vomit, my stomach suddenly dropped.
Waiting room, quiet;
faces, wet;
we held tight our best friend who was also a pet.
